A
self-described “late bloomer,” Deena originally studied
Philosophy at UC Berkley in the 60’s. She dropped out, sewed
beads on moccasins for a while and then moved to the east
coast, holding a series of small bookkeeping jobs for four
years before deciding to go back to school at age 32. She
won a $500 award from Kenneth Leventhal & Company (now Ernst
& Young) in her sophomore year at Cal State Northridge, and
graduated Summa Cum Laude with a degree in Accounting.
“I was so unprepared for my first interview that I drove
over to my mother’s house to find something to wear because
she had better clothes,” Deena recalls laughing. “I mean I
had open-toed shoes.” For those of you too young to
remember, one of the biggest books on the best seller lists
at the time was John T. Molloy’s, Dress For Success, open
toed shoes, plunging necklines and short skirts were taboo
if you were trying to make it in the corporate world. The
same holds true today. “The people who don’t come in for an
interview professionally dressed, it’s a sign to me that
they don’t have a clue,” says Deena.
After twenty years of sending people out on interviews,
Deena’s been auditioning for a new part-time role of her
own: as an actress. A small part in a community theater
production of “Rumors” led to another role as a principal
member of the cast in the Lighthouse Theater production
“Rule of Thumb,” currently touring Western Washington. She’s
also pitched in as a Sound Technician in “I Hate Hamlet.”
